Local 100 - Transalta Generation Partnership
and Transalta Corporation
Paul Drew-Brook has been a member of the Association since 1982
and became a Unit Coordinator in 1999. Paul says that it’s stunning
to look back and see the positive and productive changes that have
occurred since then, and remarks that those changes for the better
made the work all the more interesting.
Paul became a Director in 2004 and was Secretary-Treasurer for
several years. He finds bargaining committees, job evaluations, or
just being able to help most fulfilling and satisfying.
Darlene Cardinal has been a Unit Coordinator for Local 100,
TransAlta Generation Partnership, for 14 years, and a Director for
ten-plus years. She started with TransAlta in July of 2000, and
works in the Sundance plant as administration support.
Darlene is very interested in the Labor movement in Alberta, and
enjoys the exposure being involved with the UUWA has given her.
She believes in fighting for what is right and fair for our members.
Darlene is married with four children, two dogs, and two fish.
Mike started with Calgary Power August 16, 1976, and has worked
in Evansburg, Drayton Valley, and Spruce Grove in both operations,
and construction departments. Mike is currently a FortisAlberta
Construction Foreman in Spruce Grove.
Mike has been a unit coordinator since 1999, and a Director since
2012. He sit on the Electrical Utility Workers Safety Rules
Committee as a UUWA representative, and has sat on the last 3
rounds of negotiations for the UUWA.
Married for 29 years, Mike and his wife Carmen have two boys:
Mark, 27; and, Shawn, 24. Together they all enjoy pulling the 5th
wheel around and fishing in the summer; and, curling and skiing in
Lisa spent 16 years working for Greyhound Lines of Canada in the
payroll department, working her way up to Payroll Supervisor. She
made the move to Altalink in 2005 in the capacity of Sr. Payroll
Leader. Lisa has over 25 years experience in payroll, dealing with
multiple collective agreements throughout her career in almost all
Lisa became a UC for Altalink in 2007, and a member of the board
at the AGM that same year. For the past couple of years Lisa has
also taken on the role of board Secretary-Treasurer.

Grace Thostenson - Business Manager

Grace joined the UUWA in 2000 and has been the Business
Manager since 2001. Prior to joining the UUWA, she held a variety
of positions with the IBEW Local 348.
Grace has over 25 years of labour relations experience in the
telecommunications and electrical power industries under
provincial and federal labour jurisdictions.
She holds a designation as a Certified Human Resources
Professional (CHRP); a certificate in Human Resources from the
University of Calgary; a certificate in Job Evaluation from the
University of Wisconsin; a certificate in Mutual Gains Bargaining
from Cornell University; and a certificate in Change Management.
Grace has taken and attended numerous courses, conferences and
training. She is a Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) certified
Facilitator and has facilitated various courses including Collective
Bargaining at the AFL/CLC Winter School in Jasper.
She is currently the Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors of the
Workers' Compensation Board - Alberta and was a Director from
2012 to 2015. Grace serves as Chair of the WCB Policy Committee
and is a member of two other committees: Governance and
Human Resource & Compensation.
Grace is a Vice-President of the Alberta Federation of Labour. She
serves as Chair of the Human Resources Committee.
In June 2015 Grace was appointed as a Director on the Board of
Public Interest Alberta.
She was appointed as a member of the Alberta Labour Relations
Board from 2002 to 2014. She served as a Public member of the
Certified General Accountants Appeal Tribunal from 2002 to 2012.
Douglas Cooper - Assistant Business Manager
Douglas Cooper has over 30 years of labour relations experience,
previously serving as President of Local 302 of the International
Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and subsequently as
Business Agent of Local 212 of IATSE.
Doug commenced working with the UUWA in 2006.
He has served on a variety of boards and commissions in Alberta
for many years, including the Alberta Labour Relations Board, the
Appeals Commission for the WCB, and as a public member for the
College of Dental Technologists.
